What Is HPV?
Human Papilloma Virus is the most common sexually transmitted infection and is one of the leading causes of Oropharyngeal Cancer.
According to data from the ongoing NHANES study, approximately 26 million Americans on any given day have an oral HPV infection.
Human papilloma Virus or HPV is thought to cause 70% of oropharyngeal cancers in the United States.
About 10% of men and 3.6% of women have oral HPV, and oral HPV infection is more common with older age.
How does it Spread?
Oral HPV is transmitted to the mouth by oral sex, or possibly in other ways.
How does it Present?
A sore in mouth that does not heal for weeks
A red, white, or black discoloration in mouth.
Dysphagia or pain while swallowing.
A swollen but painless tonsil, usually on one side.
Burning sensation when chewing
A persistent sore throat or hoarse voice

How do we prevent it?
The Good News is that it is preventable
The HPV Vaccine :
Two vaccines known as Gardasil and Cervarix protect against the strains of HPV that cause cancers
CDC recommends HPV vaccination for 11- to 12-year-olds.
CDC also recommends HPV vaccination for everyone through age 26 years, if not vaccinated already.
Vaccination is not recommended for everyone older than age 26 years.
